The hospitality industry offers many job opportunities

From those with specialist skill sets (e.g. food and beverage professionals) to those with less industry specific skill sets (e.g. HR, management, finance, security) - the latter being referred to as ancillary or support positions.

  • Ancillary and support positions

Ancillary positions are those that are vitally important within the industry but are not hospitality industry specific. Given the large numbers of humans involved in the hospitality sector, one of the most important ancillary roles is that of human resource management.

Like every other industry, companies working within the hospitality sector are also looking to make profits from their day to day operations. The importance of financial departments, who take responsibility for managing and projecting cash flow, creditors and debtors and holding individual departments accountable, are key drivers to business success.

So too are the sales and marketing activities within the organisation - without a clear and coherent message, how can prospective clients or existing (repeat) guests know about the services being offered?

Other ancillary roles like establishment security and information systems management are just as important in ensuring safe and efficient day to day operations for organisations working within the hospitality sector.
