  • Finger foods are foods that are intended to be eaten using just one’s hands

Often, these sorts of foods are served at functions, where guests can help themselves to the items of food placed on nearby tables, or served by waiters who walk around holding trays of food.

    • Ensure that the selected venue is large enough to accommodate the number of guests that will be attending.
    • The venue should be thoroughly cleaned before any further preparation takes place.
    • Ensure that all facilities (like parking, bathrooms, etc) and equipment (like tables, crockery and glassware) are available and in working order.
    • A sufficient number of staff should be available on the day to help set up the venue, serve the food and clear away dirty glasses.
    • Finger food functions do not necessarily require formal table settings. Instead, it is recommended that cocktail tables (covered in clean table-cloths) are placed strategically around the venue to give guests access to food, side plates and serviettes, while allowing for easy movement in between.  Cocktail tables also help to relieve guests of their dirty glasses.
    • Set up a temporary bar, using a table, if the venue does not have one.
    • Decorations should be used to create an appropriate ambience, whether they are generic (like flowers and lighting), or slightly more intricate and aligned to a theme (like posters, props and more).

  • Advantages and disadvantages of finger food functions

Finger food functions are often preferred over other types of formal functions because they can accommodate a greater number of people in smaller venues, and are held for a shorter period of time, thus bringing the cost of venue hire down. Also, since food is consumed by hand, fewer utensils and cutlery are required – this further reduces costs, as well as time needed in setting up and clearing up.

For guests, finger food type functions allow for greater socialising (as guests are not seated and placed next to the same person). Finger foods are also often favoured for the diverse range of food items that are served - guests can pick and choose as they like.

On the other hand, finger food functions can often turn out to be more expensive. Because food that is served at these types of functions is more diverse in nature, ingredient costs are often higher and can take longer to prepare.
