Overseen by SAQA (The South African Qualifications Authority) the NQF (National Qualification Framework) has 10 levels.

In order to have a fulfilling career in the hospitality industry, formal and accredited recognition of achievements is preferred. Passing Hospitality Studies at Matric will offer a hospitality enthusiast a NQF level 4. Following this, there are a number of ways to go about up skilling  within the hospitality industry; acquiring hands on / on-the-job experience within a hospitality establishment. Or, enrolling for further education in hospitality programs at FET colleges or at university to gain a degree in hospitality administration, hospitality management, hotel and tourism management or the like.

  • Reasons for studying further

Traditionally one of the main reasons why people studied further was in an attempt to fast track to managerial positions within a hospitality establishment.  However, managerial positions are not guaranteed without substantial work experience which itself takes time. The hospitality industry and the specific, skilled jobs required within it, call for individuals to have operational experience in addition to the right set of personal skills and recognized certifications. A degree or MBA in a hospitality related subject is still considered a great foundation to a successful career but doesn't give guarantees - it simply gives one a better chance of securing placement in the services sector.
