  • Unlike most industries, the hospitality sector is 'open' 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year

Focus is not only on Monday to Friday and can be very seasonal. Employees tend to work long hours during the course of one work week, normally in shifts and when busy, tend to be asked to work overtime. The result is a very different working environment and one that must be controlled -  normally through government enforced regulations or acts - to ensure all employees work in fair and duly rewarding conditions. Employers must treat staff in a fair and respectful manner, look after their welfare and be responsible for the working conditions in which they operate.

  • Basic information

In order to create this conducive working environment for employees, a number of important policies and acts have been put in place by the government in an attempt to monitor working conditions and reduce exploitation or undue stress. These policies centre on protecting the rights of employees and documenting the obligations of employers. Generally they relate to  discrimination, safety in the workplace, staff compensation and benefits. With regards to wages, government policy requires that employers pay a minimum wage, overtime pay and other necessary compensations for services rendered by employees. This extends through to the formal hiring process, where every potential employee must be given an equal chance and not be discriminated against.
