Computer Applications Technology (CAT) offers the
opportunity to develop a valuable life skill for entering the world
of work immediately on leaving school. Excellent marketable
end-user skills are obtained on the Microsoft Office suite as well
as general computing, effective internet usage, email and
researching skills. It is a three year course and starts in
Grade 10. It is not possible for a learner to drop a subject at
Grade 11 level, so that she can take up CAT at a later stage.
CAT is a recommended subject for further studies for example in
Education, Computer Studies, Technology and Business
Studies.
In Grade 12, a learner is required to complete a portfolio
of work consisting of two large tasks, three tests and two
examinations. This portfolio makes up 100 out of the final
400 marks. They are further required to complete a research
based practical project which makes up another 100 out of the final
400 marks. Their Final Theory and Final Practical
examinations make up the other 100 each.
