Frequently Asked Questions

If you can’t find an answer to your question on this page, simply type your message here.

Is Obami free?

Yep, Obami is free to join. It's all about bringing the power of the Internet to you and your school… information shouldn't cost a thing. The only thing you will have to pay for are the SMS bundles that you can purchase by contacting the Obami Team.

Can anyone join the Obami community?

Nope, only pupils, teachers and parents associated with registered schools are allowed to join the Obami community.

How can my school register with Obami?

To get your school involved, simply email the Obami Team, or apply through the Contact Obami page - make sure you provide your school name and contact details, so that we can send your school administrator a registration form and an Obami invitation email. Once your school administrator has signed up, he/she will be able to create your school's Community Portal. This will generate email invitations to be sent to all pupils, teachers and parents at your school, requesting them to sign up to Obami.

How do I get started?

If your school is registered with Obami, you will soon be sent an email from your school's Obami representative, inviting you to join the community (check your spam folder, as it may have landed up there). In that email, you will find an authentication code (something like 0eb15d). Copy the code, go to the sign up page on Obami and paste it in the form, along with the rest of your registration details. You will then be asked to complete your My Account page - ensure that you fill in as much as possible, as it will help you to get the most out of using Obami.

Why isn't my teacher listed under one of my chosen subjects in the My School Info section of My Account?

Firstly, this may be a simple loading error, so try this: select another subject and then reselect your particular subject.

If your teacher still doesn't appear in the dropdown list, it might be because you haven't selected the same subject name as him/her (best you ask your teacher what he/she has chosen). Another reason may be that he/she hasn't registered on Obami yet (best you remind him/her to sign up soon).

How do I find other people and add them as my friends on Obami?

There are two ways...

1) Run a search by entering the person's Obami Username or their Firstname and Surname in the Obami search box (remember to select the Members option from the drop down). Then simply send them a friend request from one of their profile pages.

2) If you know the other person's email address, you can send him/her a friend request by clicking the Add Friend button in your my Friends section.

How do I send a message (or share photos and blogs, etc) to a group of people (like my class, my sport's team, etc)?

There are two ways...

1) You can create a group in your My Friends section (you will only be able to add those users who are already your friends), and then send them a message (or share a photo album, etc) by setting your security at Group level and then selecting the relevant group.

2) Create a community portal, and upload a CSV file while doing so. A CSV file is a document created in Microsoft Excel and saved as a Comma Delimited (CSV) file - it must contain 1 column of email addresses of all the people you'd like to invite to join your community. Once you have Published your portal, invitations will be sent out to your invitees. Anyone who joins the portal will become a member of your newly created group (which is named after your portal).

How do Obami's privacy controls work?

Obami has different levels of privacy for sharing all your stuff. Right at the point of upload, you get to choose exactly who to share your information and pictures with, whether that's at Public or Private level, or with friends and groups that you've already created. Remember that members of any portals you have created will form a group as well, making it easy to share all your stuff with whomever you choose.

How do I change my username?

You can ask us to change your username for you through the Contact Obami page. We have to change it manually from our end because your username is your unique ID on Obami, so bear with us, it could take up 48 hours to process.

How do I change my status?

If you have been assigned the wrong Status (e.g. Teacher instead of Pupil) by your school administrator, let us know through the Contact Obami page, and we'll update this for you after confirming it with your school first.

How do I report inappropriate content and cyber bullying on Obami?

Most pages that can be viewed by other Obami users have a link or button to report offensive material. Clicking this will send an email to the Obami Team notifying us of inappropriate content on that page. Obami has the right to delete such material, and inform the associated school administrator who will thereafter be responsible for administering the appropriate penalty. In severe cases, Obami has the right to delete a user's account. For the reporting of cyber bullying, simply send an email with as much detail as possible to info@obami.com, or send a message through the Contact Obami page. If necessary, we will get the relevant school involved to combat such behaviour.
